Helambu is a region of highland villages in Nepal, about 30 km from Kathmandu. It is the home of the Hyolmo and Helam people. They Hyolmos have cultural similarities with Tibetans, while Helam people are ethnically Nepalese. The word Helambu derives from the word Hyolmo. The Helambu region begins at the Lauribina La pass and descends to the Melamchi valley. Helambu is famous for its sweet apples and artistic Buddhistmonasteries and it is a Buddhist pilgrimage site. Several trekking routes visit Helambu, one of them being known as Helambu Trek.
Pullahari is the main seat of His Eminence the fourth Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Lodro Chokyi Nyima. In 1986, the Venerable Dabzang Rinpoche offered land for a monastery to the third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche and requested that he establish a three-year retreat centre for monks of the Karma Kagyu lineage.The monastery building was completed in February 1992 and was blessed by the third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche. On April 26, 1992, the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche dissolved his mind in parinirvana. However, he had left behind his instructions and wishes to his devoted monks and disciples along with the wealth of his legacy.
The Lantang National Park is the fourth national park in Nepal and was established in 1976 as the first Himalayan national park. The protected area exceeds an altitudinal range of 21,160 ft and covers an area of 1,710 km2 (660 sq mi) in the Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Sindhulpalchok districts of the central Himalayan region encompassing 26 Village Development Committees. It is linked with the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve in Tibet. The high altitude sacred lake of Gosainkunda falls within the park.The Gosainkunda lake (4,300 m (14,100 ft))and the Dorje Lakpa range (6,988 m (22,927 ft)) bisect the park from east–west to south–east.
